Illinois became the fifth state to pass this important legislation. This legislation requires mandatory suicide awareness and prevention training for certain school personnel. Major components of the legislation are:
- Teachers, school guidance counselors, school social workers and other school personnel who work with students in grades 7-12 shall be trained to identify the warning signs of suicidal behaviors in adolescents and teens.
- This training shall include various intervention techniques.
- The training shall be provided within the existing framework of in-service training programs offered by the Board.
- The training can also be offered as part of the required professional development activities.
