Governor Haley Barbour signed the bill into law on April 13, 2009. Upon Governor Barbour’s signature, Mississippi became the fourth state to pass the Jason Flatt Act. This legislation requires mandatory youth suicide prevention training for all teachers and principals.
Major components of the legislation are:
- Suicide prevention education is required for all licensed teachers and principals beginning with the 2009-2010 school year.
- Annual in-service training must include at least two hours of suicide prevention training.
- This education may be accomplished through self-review of suitable suicide prevention material.
