Mental Health Issues involving Suicide
The Phoenix Division of The Jason Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness and providing information, tools, and resources that addresses Substance Use Disorders / Opioid Use Disorders and co-occurring mental health issues that can result in suicidal ideation. Our mission is to educate the public about the increasing issues surrounding drug abuse, specifically opioid abuse, and mental health. Through education, we hope more people will avoid drug abuse and those who are struggling with drug abuse will with less stigma search out resources for help.
Facts and Stats about Substance Use and Suicide
- According to the CDC’s National Vital Statistics System, for the 12-month period ending in January 2023, there were 107,260 reported drug overdose-related deaths in the US. Of these deaths, 81,269 (or 75.8%) were related to some type of opioid use. The CDC suspects these numbers are underreported.
- According to a 2018 article, “substance use disorders confer a risk of suicide that is 10-14 times greater than that of the general population. Deaths related to substance use are highest among persons with alcohol use disorders followed by persons who abuse opiates.”
